1. What are decision-making skills?

Decision-making skills involve problem-solving and addressing issues that require decision-making. You are always invited to make and implement decisions. The quality and outcome of your decisions have the potential to positively or negatively impact your life or affect your employees and organization. Decision-making skills encompass a series of conclusions and actions taken to arrive at a decision that ensures a desired outcome is achieved.

Successful people enjoy the feeling of confidence that comes from knowing how to make wise and appropriate choices. Along with practice, you can improve your ability to make good decisions in all areas of life because life involves many decisions, and making the best choices is key to your success.

So, when you have the ability to make decisions, what will you gain?

  • Achieving goals at work and in personal life.
  • Avoid mistakes that could have negative consequences for you.
  • For young people, this skill is even more important because being able to make wise, mature, and beneficial decisions is one of the signs of maturity!

2. How are decisions classified?

Decisions made can typically be divided into three categories:

Decision based on standards:

This includes routine, repetitive daily decisions. The solutions for these types of decisions are often established procedures, rules, and policies. These decisions are relatively simple due to their repetitive nature. You tend to make these decisions by reasoning logically and referring to existing regulations. Problems can arise if you don't follow these established rules correctly.

A word of caution: don't let standardized decisions become justifications for careless or avoidant decisions.

Emergency decision

These are decisions that require quick and precise action and need to be made almost instantaneously. This type of decision often arises unexpectedly and without warning, demanding your immediate and full attention.

Situations requiring immediate decision-making allow very little time for planning or involving others in the decision-making process.

A well-thought-out decision

This type of decision requires focused planning, discussion, and consideration. It typically involves establishing operational direction or implementing changes. The decision-making process includes selection, adaptation, and innovation. Selecting from the available options allows for the best possible fit between the final decision and several proven solutions.

Effectiveness depends on the decisions you choose. Those decisions must be the most widely accepted, profitable, and efficient. A well-thought-out decision is one that can enhance (or diminish) your image and managerial effectiveness.
