Humanity has entered the 4.0 era with a multitude of innovations and developments, accompanied by numerous opportunities and challenges. Everything is gradually changing to adapt to today's 4.0 age. Employment is no exception. The question facing the "future of the nation" is: how can humans survive and take control of their work, instead of robots?

Technology is changing everything.

Ms. Tran Yen Dinh, Director of Education at Microsoft Vietnam, affirmed that we are living in a constantly changing world, and the impact of information technology platforms is making the world change faster than ever before. According to data presented at the World Economic Conference, with the Fourth Industrial Revolution, 65% of future jobs for Generation Z (born between 1995 and 2012) have not yet emerged. Jobs that today require 50% technological knowledge will increase to 77% in the future.

From the perspective of businesses and international organizations, Mr. Ngo Quang Vinh - Education and Health Specialist at the Asian Development Bank (ADB) - emphasized that historically, industrial revolutions have eliminated old jobs but created new ones. “It’s difficult to say what jobs will be created in the next 5, 10, 20, or 50 years. I can only say that manual, repetitive jobs will gradually disappear or be replaced by blockchain and artificial intelligence. Jobs that heavily rely on cognitive skills, interaction, communication, critical thinking, and creativity will always be created,” Mr. Vinh said.

The value of emotions

“When discussing this risk, the general sentiment among various sectors of society is one of anxiety. However, there is another perspective: no matter how things change, people remain at the center of life; it's just that we need to change ourselves to seize opportunities,” shared Ms. Vu Hong Thuong, a human resources expert at Deloitte Consulting Vietnam . “Human resources possess a strong advantage: creativity. In an era of increasing digitalization, we must be even more ‘human,’ meaning we must be more emotionally expressive.”

A stable job is outdated.

Job stability is a traditional attribute of the labor market, and therefore a goal for job seekers. However, if someone is still seeking stable employment today, they are going against the trend. In the future, there will be fewer and fewer jobs that people can commit to for life, while more contract or short-term project-based jobs will develop. Constant job changes will create opportunities for young people to choose jobs based on their interests, or to do what they find most interesting at a given time. Even businesses need to adapt to this trend.

Ms. Thuong also sent a cautionary message to businesses regarding the strong shift in the nature of work that will occur in the near future. Previously, business management was primarily focused on profit, but now it's primarily about shared values and goals. “When the role of people in the workplace is personalized, if leaders cannot connect with employees, they won't be committed. Once employees work based on their interests and passions, and they don't intend to stay with one place for 20 years, simply paying them a salary won't guarantee retention. Employers must offer values that inspire enthusiasm in the new generation so they find it attractive to work for them. This will be a very fundamental change in the era of the 4.0 technological revolution.”
